McCabe Trail - Babine Mountain Provincial Park
This is a beautiful hike with nice easy grade to the summit. The trail runs along the side of Harvey Mnt and Pyramid Mnt. Lots of view points along the way up. It’s about 7k to the summit and can be done as a day trip, once you get to the summit there’s different options to go down. There’s the Blix trail that connects with Harvey Mnt about 1/2 way up. There are signs, the trail is not well mark or wasn’t the last time I was there. Parks may have done some trail Maintenance since then. If you pass by 3 lakes (Cooper Lakes) your doing good. There are so many places to camp on this trail. Once you reach the summit you could go down Little Joe Lakes trail and come out at Babine Lake Rd, this route makes for a long day but its doable 20ish km or more. The other route is to loop around Harvey Mnt and Pyramid Mnt and go down Lyons Creek Trail (27km) the trail from summit is marked with 4×4 posts. My advice is you go this way have someone park your vehicle at the trail head for lyons creek because when you get to the bottom you still have to walk 3km back to where you parked and you’ll be exhausted. To reach the trail head turn off Highway 16 onto Old Babine Lake Road. This is three km east of Smithers or 300 meters east of the Bulkley River Bridge on Hwy 16. Follow BC Parks signs leading to “Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park”. Continue past that park another 5 km to the trailhead parking and information kiosk. The road is gated at that point, with no motorized use beyond.
